Before the homes went in
We used to ride BMX bikes through the open fields out near Sugar Mill Road and behind Longmont Ford, before the homes went in.
A lot of that open ground has filled in since. The old sugar factory is still standing — a reminder of what built this side of town.
The Longmont Sugar Factory was built in 1903 and soon renamed the Great Western Sugar factory. At its peak it employed more than 700 people and processed about 3,650 tons of beets a day.
The Great Western Railway was built between 1902 and 1907 to haul sugar beets to factories like this one, and beet farming shaped the fields all around southeast Longmont.
The factory closed in 1977. Today the roughly 120-acre site is the subject of ongoing redevelopment discussions by the City.
