A town named for clean mountain air
We used to pick up dumpsters in Hygiene with Dad, for businesses like the Clark Food Store — it's the Mountain Fountain now.
And the Hygiene Post Office is a fascinating piece of local survival.
Hygiene was first called Pella. In 1873 Jacob S. Flory, a Church of the Brethren minister from Virginia, arrived and built a congregation here; the St. Vrain Church of the Brethren, built in 1880, was the denomination's first meetinghouse in Colorado.
In 1881 Flory opened the Hygiene Home, a sanitarium for tuberculosis patients drawn by the area's clean mountain air and sunshine. The town took its name. Flory applied for the first Hygiene Post Office in 1883, and the community still has its own post office and ZIP code, 80533.
The Hygiene Home operated for about eight years, later served as a hotel, and was torn down in 1926. Today Hygiene celebrates its roots each fall at Hygiene Hay Days, held since 2012.
