Longmont Then & Now

The north end of the cruise

In the early cruising days, the loop on Main ran from 3rd Avenue up to TG&Y and back. TG&Y and Showtime Video shared a shopping center on the north side — today that's Ace Hardware and Natural Grocers. Kmart was up on the north side too.

There was a movie theater at 18th and Main back then. And when the Taco Bell opened at 23rd and Main, that became the new turnaround — the place everyone hung out.

Main Street follows the old Overland Stage route, now U.S. 287 — the spine that north Longmont grew up along.

The theater at 1800 Main Street was the Movies 1, 2, 3, a three-screen theater that opened in 1976 and closed in 1997. It was run first by K-Theatres and later by United Artists and Commonwealth Theatres.

Longmont grew from about 23,000 people in 1970 to about 51,500 in 1990, and much of that growth spread north and out from the original town along Main.
