Tubing the St. Vrain home
Summers, we'd head up to Lyons, out into Apple Valley, with a tire tube — and float the St. Vrain all the way back down toward Longmont.
E.S. Lyon and his wife Adeline came from Connecticut in 1880 on their doctor's advice. The town was platted in 1882, named for him, and incorporated in 1891.
Lyons sandstone built the town's fortunes. In 1884 a railroad line reached Lyons to ship the stone east, and it went into buildings across the country — including the University of Colorado in Boulder.
The town calls itself the Double Gateway to the Rockies. In September 2013 a historic flood devastated Lyons, and the community rebuilt.
